Mizzou Homecoming 2010

I am in a state of utter jealousy right now (which rarely happens.) I am so mad that I can't be in Columbia this weekend for Mizzou Homecoming. I swear the entire time I was in undergrad, homecoming was so whack! The first year, the Kappa party got shut down before we even made it there; the second year, I dont even remember homecoming; the third year, the party was ratchett as all get out, and equally hot as hell; and last year, we didn't even wanna participate in homecoming at all! We ended up going to a party that was fun only because we felt like we were celebrating our departure from Mizzou lol, and we wanted to make the most out of it.

Really though, whenever homecoming came around, we always wanted to go somewhere else; like Chicago or back to St. Louis. I think one of the major reasons I wanted to go to homecoming this year was because I moved to the East coast. I haven't seen my homies in forever, and homecoming would be a dope excuse to come back, catch up with friends, and get chocolate wasted. PLUS College Game Day is at Mizzou?! And we're straight undefeated?! UN-FAIR. lol

AND: Did you know Mizzou started the tradition of homecoming?

"The University of Missouri started the tradition of Homecoming in 1911 when MU football coach and Director of Athletics Chester Brewer invited former students to "come home" to Columbia, Mo, for the annual football game between the University of Missouri and the University of Kansas. There are other schools that claim to have the first homecoming…in 1908, 1909 or 1910 depending upon whom you listen to, but there is no doubt that the Mizzou homecoming tradition was born in 1911!

This tradition has spread throughout the world, but the University of Missouri still boasts the largest student-run Homecoming in the nation."

I'm really happy for Mizzou though. For keeping it tight and doing it big. And I hope the Tigers whoop all over Oklahoma this weekend. Also, it's kinda cool because Mizzou is broadcasting some homecoming festivities over the net on USTREAM. You can check it out here.

Real talk, my favorite part of MU Homecoming has got to be the tailgating. Nobody does it like MIZZOU. Ok. Allow me to jump off Mizzou's penis now lol.

Washington Pics.

Sometime in August, me and Amanze went to DC for a few days. It was a dope trip. DC is such a young, happening city, and I just love it.

Here's some pics from our mini-adventure.

P.S. I get weak every time at the way Amanze is fake screaming in that picture with the bug.

Black & Yellow.

This song had to grow on me a bit. The first time I heard it I was kinda like "Que pasa?!", but now I will say that I like it.Plus it's lowkey an anthem for all things Mizzou, so thats a added bonus.

If its one thing that Wiz does really well, its make feel good music with some feel good azz videos to back it up.

The legalization of ganja has been a hot-button issue for some time now, and with Proposition 19 (the initiative to legalize marijuana in California) coming up, the conversation is becoming more candid than ever.

Well it looks as if former U.S. Surgeon General, Joycelyn Elders, has joined the discussion and she's now speaking out as an advocate for the legalization of ganja.

I don't know about you, but I think that's pretty rad.

I have done alot of research on the pros & cons of marijuana use, and Ive always been an advocate for legalization (even without smoking it).

Like many other decent people, Elders believes:
-marijuana convictions are making young people criminals
-it's a non-toxic substance
-our resources could be used in a smarter way
-alcohol is more destructive
-ganja is not physically addictive

If you would like to read the article in it's entirety and watch Elders' interview on the matter, click here and further educate yourself.

My Beautiful, Dark Twisted Fantasy.

Kanye just put out the artwork for "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy."
I love that album title btw, Its pretty bizarro, but I like it.
The fact that he doesn't give 2 effs about the criticism its about to receive, gets me all excited. lol
This is what Kanye tweeted today about the album/cover:

"Banned in the USA!!! They don't want me chilling on the couch with my phoenix"

"In the 70s album covers had actual nudity... It's so funny that people forget that... Everything has been so commercialized now."

"I know that cover just blew yall minds ... I wish yall could see how hard I'm smiling right now!!!"

"In all honesty ... I really don't be thinking about Wal-Mart when I make my music or album covers" #Kanyeshrug

"I wanna sell albums, but not at the expense of my true creativity."

Well you tell em Mr. West!
Your supporters are behind you and your dark twisted album cover 100%....even IF his snaggle tooth white girl has wings instead of arms! lol

K2? No thanks.

Ok, so I kinda have formed an opinion about K2 and Spice and all the other synthetic THC products. After being all gung-ho for them since they are legal and don't show up on drug tests, now I definitely think people should leave them alone. I was doing a lot of research on the Internet about them, and it really just freaked me out!

I think the main problem is that it affects everyone differently and has no long term research to determine if they are even safe. I mean the package clearly says "Not for Human Consumption." That's probably because they KNOW it will eff a nigga up and they don't want to be held liable.

K2 will make you get high as hell, hallucinate and hear stuff that isn't there, jerk uncontrollably, get the munchies, laugh like a mad man, be confused, and it effs up your motor skills. Some of those effects are the same as if you were to be smoking weed, BUT when has weed sent anybody to the emergency room? When has weed dangerously increased your heart rate and blood pressure to the point where you may die?

Here are some comments from some folks that smoked K2 or the other synthetic stuff:
"Dude this shit is crazy.I was stupid and decided to smoke it. (alot) like 3 grams in 2 hours... I ended up in my underwear painting a picture on my wall and i shaved my head.Although this stuff gets you (REALLY) high i would not recommend smoking it at all.For one, there is no testing done on it you could be smoking cat shit flakes sprayed with cannabanoids for all you know.and another thing, I think this may be addictive, I mean just because its like pot whose to say its not addictive?"

"Just to put my two cents in, smoked spice for the firs time last night. Took about 3 goods hits. Thirty minutes later, I'm in the back of ambulance with my heart rate 2 times what it should be. My blood pressure up way too high. Very close to going into cardiac arrest. So, more power to those of you who can smoke it, but be careful."

"I live in upstate New York and as a big toker i was in my local headshop when the guy working there gave me a free sample of voodoo remix. I had heard of this stuff before but never was big on trying it. I smoked it out of my bong took like 6 rips and instantly felt it. At first it felt like a really strong bud high, however 15 minutes later i became very paranoid and could sware i heard demons inside me talking to me. On the other hand i went into numerous laughing seizures and could not stop giggling. Definatly need to try it again."

"I'm an avid pothead. Been smoking weed for close to 30 years now. Yesterday I tried some of this Herbal incense for the first time. Mr. Nice Guy. It came in a sealed 1 gram baggie for $19. Kinda put me off. I packed only a pinch in my bowl and smoked it with my wife. We got 2 decent hits a piece off it. After 5-8 mins, we were both stoned and feeling good. But I'm glad I didnt try to over do it from the get go, like I would with weed. The buzz I got was very intense. Close to a shroom buzz. It lasted about 1.5 - 2 hours. I can see how someone that smoked more of this than needed could feel some bad effects. Take the advice of others in this thread. Smoke this stuff in moderation, not like you would smoke weed. It's a chemical, and not much info on it either. I'll continue to smoke more of this product because of random testing in my work place. But it will always be in safe amounts."

"My boyfriend and I have smoked K3 at least 3 times in the past few months. Last night he offered me some "King Krypto." Immediately after taking 2 hits, and with no alcohol, medications, or other drugs in my system, I thought I was going to die. My face turned so pale I looked like a corpse, my lips turned chalk white, and my skin was freezing cold. I was not coherent. I was sure I was going to die. My heart was racing so fast that I thought I was going to have a heart attack. Suddenly I became very tired and just wanted to sleep, but fortunately my boyfriend fought to keep me awake. My boyfriend and his roommates called 911 and I was taken to the hospital in an ambulance. I spent the night in the isolation ward because I could not control the level of my voice or what I was saying, and I was yelling random things for 3 hours straight. DO NOT SMOKE THE FAKE STUFF. It is not worth it. please don't be stupid."

Also, there are reports that people are trying to produce "fake" versions of these synthetic drugs by basically putting a bunch of junk in the package and spraying it with miscellaneous chemicals. Just be careful about what you put in your body and what you smoke.

I'm sorry, but I'm not effing with it.
I'm super scared just reading these comments. I say if you wanna get high, get some weed.
At least marijuana has been around for eons, even though there isn't any research based on its long term effects.
The fact that weed is illegal is something yall are gonna just have to deal with, but in my opinion its better than taking your chances with K2.

And look at this dude and his girl.
High as kites!

I'm not gonna lie though, this video is funny as hell lol. It probably makes some of you wanna try it, but don't, I said! lol.
Honestly though, I just wanted to show you guys some of what I was reading on the Internet so yal could form your own opinions.
It's all about being informed. :)

P.S. This is a blog. It's not scientific fact. It's our OPINION. Do what you want with it.
I'm just putting my pennies in. :)

Formal Education vs. Self Education.

This is a really interesting article posted in The Atlanta Post about formal graduate education vs. self educating. The article references a MBA degree, but I definitely think it applies to all graduate degrees.
_______________________________________________________________________________ Is an MBA Really the Gold Ticket to Career Success or Not?

For many, the decision to get an MBA is among the biggest financial commitments of one’s life. The tuition for a traditional MBA program is $25,000 per year for a lesser known program to $350,000 for a four year program at a top tier school. The combined tuition and living expenses are above the average annual wage for adult Americans.Paying for an MBA is like taking out a mortgage on one’s career, with no guarantee of future earnings to pay for the degree.

According to best-selling business author and blogger Seth Godin, an MBA is a screening tool for job placements such as being a consultant or an investment banker. He wrote, “it’s hard for me to understand why this is a better use of time and money than actual experience combined with a dedicated reading of 30 or 40 books.”

One of Godin’s followers was recently featured on CNNMoney and Fortune.com for espousing the same sentiments. Josh Kaufman, a 28-year-old entrepreneur and former assistant brand manager for Procter & Gamble, has become a well known MBA basher, based on his Godin’s writings. Kaufman applied Godin’s writings to his own personal experience and is now using it to turn a profit.

Five years ago, Kaufman was working at P&G as an assistant brand manager after graduating from the University of Cincinnati. Most of his colleagues held elite MBA degrees, which was intimidating to Kaufman. So, he began to self-educate by reading numerous classic business textbooks such as the “Essentials of Accounting,” to “Competitive Strategy” by Harvard professor Michael Porter and “The Effective Executive” by the late management guru Peter Drucker. Kaufman said, “After I went through the self-education process, I felt like a peer, I was able to walk into a boardroom and hold my own with people who had graduated from Stanford and Wharton. It was very exciting.”

Kaufman then created PersonalMBA.com, an online self-education program and penned a book “The Personal MBA” to pass along what he feels is an economically viable alternative to attending an accredited MBA program. He started doing coaching and consulting for $1,000 a month, created a 12-week online crash course delivered live and on video for $997. His website features what he considers to be the 99 best business books that lay out all the basic principles of business and a community in which to discuss the ideas with others. Kaufman claims he is already pulling down what a freshly minted Harvard MBA would make upon joining Boston Consulting Group or McKinsey & Co. “Without any of the debt,” he quickly adds. He also posted a “manifesto” to explain the idea to newcomers and to urge them to “skip business school” and “educate yourself.”

Kaufman presents an interesting and viable alternative to paying for an MBA program. The pursuit of knowledge both inside and outside of the classroom is what keeps the mind sharp and competitive. However, it is questionable just how many candidates will actually get to the interview with an MBA from an online study program by a self proclaimed educator. The notorious Godin says that both experience and education contribute to career success. It is questionable how many candidates will get through the door without the educational background the employer is seeking. Kaufman was fortunate in obtaining the needed exposure to rub elbows with the upper echelon when he joined P&G. However, he was placed there after graduating from the University of Cincinnati by virtue of the school’s cooperative education program. He then decided to rise to the level of his peer group through self-study.

For the low cost of Kaufman’s program, it is certainly worth a shot for those that would seek an MBA but find it cost prohibitive. However, both Godin and Kaufman state that experience counts just as much as your education. Kaufman would likely not have been inspired to branch out on his own without it. But my advice is get the best education that you can afford, and keep your day job. In doing so, your success will find you.

This article really gets me thinking, because next year I plan on going to UVA to get my Masters in Public Health. Its so hard to get a job out here even with a bachelors degree, so I figured I'd need even more education to make myself competitive. Even though this article brings up some interesting points, I 100% still plan on getting my MPH. BUT it does inspire me to go get some books and start making moves even before I get into the program.

I will say this though: for those people that can't afford to further their education, books are where it's at. I would be reading and researching like crazy lol.

All I want is him.

Elle Varner is a dope up and coming singer, and on top of the talent she has, she's so cute. She's also featured on BET's Music Matters campaign.

Here she is covering Miguel's "All I Want is You."

The Cypher 2010

I missed the BET Awards yesterday, but that did NOT stop me from checking out the cyphers. It seems like this year everybody and they mama was asked to spit...color me happy :)

Cypher 1: Wiz Khalifa, Bones Brigante, Yelawolf, and Reakwon.

My thoughts: Personally, I think Bones Brigante and Yelawolf killed this one. I eff with the homie Wiz, but he recycled rhymes from like 4 different songs. He should have tried a little harder to be original. Nevertheless, it was still cute, and I'm sure the people that aren't familiar with him liked it.

Cypher 2:Tyga, Kuniva,Diamond, and Royce da 5'9.

My thoughts:Tyga Tyga killed. He's getting better and better and ya girl likes it! Kuniva did good but Diamond was pretty boring...and she said vicious one too many times lol. Royce da 5'9 also ripped it,to be expected.

Cypher 3: OMG, Doughboy, Ice Cube, Diggy, Jo Jo, & Rev Run.

My thoughts: Lets just be real, the show out here was Diggy. He has charisma for days, plus is about to be a heartthrob in these streets. And I'm sorry, but JoJo just looks goofy to me lol. Ol wandering eye having self. But Cube's sons did well too. I can dig it.

Cypher 4: Reek da Villain, Zawcain, Mickey Factz, & Busta Rhymes.

My thoughts: Im dead. I died while watching that cypher. It was too much good for me. All of those guys were the truth. #represent. Reek was magnificent. And from what I've heard of Zawcain, his message is always relevant. He definitely keeps his ear to what's happening in this world. And Mickey is always nice. #RESPECT.

Cypher 5: G.O.O.D. MUSIC- Pusha T, Big Sean,Cyhi Da Prynce, Common, & Kanye West.

My thoughts:
This cypher has got to be my favorite. Big Sean...ripped, Cyhi da Prynce...ripped, & 'Ye...ripped. Common could have went a little harder though. And Pusha T did his thing for sure, but it seemed like a bunch of short one liners to me. Nevertheless, I love these guys. And Kanye can do no wrong in my eyes. #Schwing (Waynes World reference lol).

I can't stop saying "Oh, thats yo girl..?" Word to Big Sean lol.

Anywho, Im quite satisfied with all these cyphers. Big ups to BET.

all love,

Music Monday 10.11.10

Allow me to scream this from the top of my lungs: LOST IN THE TREES.

Saturday night me and my boyfriend Amanze were downtown hanging out, when we noticed all these people going in the same place with a gaggle of instruments. Naturally, we're thinking wtf is going on up there. So we go in.

The venue was this really dope restaurant/hang out spot that sold exclusive tea and had hookah (which we smoked up with the quickness.) Three bands were scheduled to perform that night. Two of the bands were Elf Power and Lost in the Trees.

Im telling yal, when LITT started playing, ish jumped to a whole 'nother level. You ever hear music that is so good that it makes you want to either cry, scream, or just start fighting random people in the crowd for no damn reason? Yea, it was that type of good lol. Because as soon we heard that violin, it was curtains for everyone in the room.
Honestly though, I was genuinely blown to smithereens. At our show they had like 3 guitars, a french horn, drums, a tambourine, a violin, and the sweetest sounding lead singer (but in videos its like an additional baby orchestra and brass section). They sound great on their cd's, but still sound so much better live.

Their newest cd is called "All Alone in an Empty House" (2010). You should definitely check it out this awesome group from North Carolina.

Here are a couple tunes from the newest cd:

All Alone in an Empty House

Walk Around the Lake
(just imagine hearing this live...blown!)

Don't you just love indie music?
